Coffee in the Future
May 25
Last year, we participated in Uneton48 and won a generous prize, sponsored by Angel Films. The check had an expiration date set for June 2025, so a new production was quickly put together in order to make use of the prize budget.
The resulting project is titled Three Studies in How to Drink Coffee in the Future — an art film written and directed by Toman Von Kantzow.
We worked with almost the same team and cast from the Uneton48. The set was quite static, limited to a single restaurant location, and the entire shoot was completed in one high-tempo production day.
Just like before, I served as 1st AC, with cinematography by Jacob Nordgren (Mestoil Films), using the same Red Gemini 5K S35 camera we had won the prize with.
Lens choice is always a mix of artistic vision and practicality, and should ultimately serve the story. For this project, we used the groundbreaking 1970s vintage zoom lens, the Cooke Varotal 20–100mm Uncoated T3.1, along with an ARRI Ultra Prime 14mm T1.9 for the wider, more complex shots. It’s hard to describe the look in simple terms — raw and rough would come close, especially paired with the lighting setup we used.
I'm grateful to be part of this production and this incredible team. Huge thanks again to KopterCam and Feelm Creative for the gear and support, and to Angel Films for the lens test range and camera prep space.
